In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
- Demonstrate and analyse research done of conventions, using screenshots etc. - REFERENCE REAL FILMS and what impact did this have on your ideas and final film?
- Choose some of following genre conventions to talk about : soundtrack, location, character types (Propp Theory), titles/production company name, costume, props, narrative structure
- Have you been unconventional in any way? How? Why? Why not? Give examples
- Is the product successful in setting out what you intended to do with the conventions of horror?
- Talk about narrative theory and how they apply to the film (Toderov)
Captive
Sound: Eerie minor soundtrack, with 'reverby' diegetic sounds (to create a sense of space and isolation) - find film example - Silent hill?
Location: Derelict building - to create a sense of abandonment, and therefore loneliness and vulnerability. Example: I Spit on Your Grave?
Character types: Protagonist conforms to typical horror genre character type - teenage boy - relation to audience (15 rating). Antagonist also conforms to horror genre - young girl - uncomfortable for the audience/juxtaposition of the usual 'innocent' young girl to 'villain' - The Womanin Black opening.
Titles: Sought inspiration from Se7en - jittery titles, that flashed into different shapes and sizes upon their appearance on screen. The quick cuts make the audience feel on edge. Capitalised, grungy typeface - also conforms with genre and makes for a less rounded, sharper aesthetic.
Props: Fake blood, rope, chair (old - reinforcing abandoned setting, mise-en-scene) cctv camera (creates idea of being watched), dolls - The Woman in Black.
Narrative Structure: Challenges usual conventions of narratives - Toderov's theory. Does not begin with equilibrium. Usually a horror film may establish the protagonist's day to day life, whereas Captive began with action immediately. We used The Evil Dead opening as a general style model, where it begins with an intense scene of a demon being burnt alive.
Costume/Make up: Protagonist wearing clothes that a normal teenager may wear - relatable to audience and to create a sense of reality. Antagonist (Rhiannon) wore an old style white frock dress. The colour white challenges conventions - normally darker colours are associated with the villain character, and white usually carries connotations of purity and cleanliness. Creates a sense of irony using this juxtaposition. Costume based upon the costumes used in The Woman in Black, as we felt that this helped to emphasise the young age of the girl whilst also showing that she'd been there a long time. Protagonists had strong make up on showing infliction of injury, reinforcing the sadistic nature of the villain, also making the viewer feel empathy.
